The Lilongwe Water Board (LWB) has described its newly launched Dzalanyama Springs bottled water as a game-changer, citing its uniqueness and high standards that will ensure sustainability on the market.
Speaking during the launch at the LWB bottling plant in Lilongwe, Board Chairperson Inkosi ya Makhosi Mbelwa V said the product is self-sustaining and will help generate more revenue for the institution.
He further disclosed that the initiative was fully financed through internally generated funds without debts, and the Board is also planning to venture into solar and gas projects.
In his remarks, Peter Simbani who is Controller of Statutory Corporations, commended LWB for finding innovative ways of raising funds to sustain its operations, noting that many parastatals struggle to access resources and he said such initiatives will contribute to the realization of Malawi 2063 goals.
Simbani also revealed that other water boards are preparing to introduce their own bottling plants as part of ongoing public sector reforms.
On his part, Elias Chimlambe, Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Water and Sanitation, said LWB has demonstrated its capacity to transform and deliver quality services in line with government’s mandate of providing safe and clean water.
He emphasized that all service providers must comply with national water quality standards, acknowledging that past challenges in supplying clean water have since been addressed, reducing the risk of waterborne diseases.
The project is part of the Public Sector Reforms Program introduced in 2020, aimed at enhancing efficiency and sustainability in state-owned institutions.
