APAM Launches Nationwide Registration of People with Albinism

The Association of Persons with Albinism in Malawi (APAM) has launched an initiative to register all people with albinism across the country with an aim of establishing accurate national database.

According to APAM’s President, Young Muhamba, the initiative will help improve the organization’s operations in all districts where people with albinism live, making their work more efficient and easier to manage.

He explained that APAM already carries out various activities across the country, but the lack of reliable data on the number of people with albinism has made it difficult for their programs to run effectively.

“We understand that this initiative has just started and is facing several challenges. However, since this is only the second month, we plan to meet as an organization at the end of the month to review and identify better ways to address the challenges. This will help ensure the program continues to run smoothly,” said Muhamba.

Muhamba added that the organization is committed to improving its services and reaching everyone in need. However, limited resources have slowed down their efforts. He expressed hope that the registration exercise will enable smoother operations when implementing programs in different districts.

“We cannot effectively serve everyone without accurate data on the actual number of people with albinism in the country, as currently the organization has no accurate data.

"This initiative has come at the right time and will help us have reliable national figures,” he said.

Muhamba said that the exercise began in March and is expected to be completed in all districts by June.
