The Center for Social Accountability (CSAT) has challenged Nkhotakota based journalists to utilize Access To Information (ATI) law to enhance civic rights and the district's developments.

This has been remarked during an engagement meeting on Tuesday 21st July 2026 with 17 journalists in the district, where CSAT was briefing journalists on the Youth, Media and Parliamentary Accountability project.

Project coordinator for CSAT Albert Lulaka said the meeting was crucial because it is expected to enhance media literacy and capacity for increased civic engagement.

Lulaka  further said the project will among others sustain youth participation and leadership for positive collaboration with Members of parliament.

"The project will see, youth engaging with the council as well as parliamentarians to address issues of development in an engagement and constructive manner so that there should be no issues of  violence", Lulaka said.

Apart from that, Lulaka added that the project will also improve parliamentary responsiveness to citizen and youth demand.

Lulaka also said, for the objectives to be fulfilled there is a need for journalists to improve in the use of ATI law in order to capture issues that affect the communities, for the betterment of the district.

"We are here in Nkhotakota, to brief journalists about the project so that they can capture stories with evidence, with credible sources in order to amplify development in the society", he added.

One of the participants from Nkhotakota  community radio  station Fatima Lameck hailed the training saying it will assist her during her daily work as journalist especially when covering stories that matter to the community particularly development stories.

CSAT is implementing  the Youth, Media and Parliamentary Accountability in Malawi in Mangochi, Nkhotakota and Mzimba with support from German Federal Foreign Office.
