The Mchinji District hospital has registered over 30 cases of leprosy from January to June this year.
The District's Health Promotion Officer Owen Chataika says it's worrisome that the disease is spreading after it was previously declared it was eradicated.
"We believe these cases have resurfaced as a result of some unvaccinated individuals while at a tender age," said Chataika.
Chataika revealed that mass awareness campaigns are underway to sensitize the communities on best prevention practices and early detection of leprosy signs and symptoms.
However, Chataika says resource constraints are hindering the efforts to be extended to many areas.
Reports show that cases have been reported in Kochirira, Gullime, Ludzi, Mkanda and Mchinji District hospital just to mention a few.
Meanwhile, Health Rights Activists Maziko Matemba has expressed concern with the increase in cases of leprosy at a time it was eradicated some years back.
"There is more that should be done by health officials so that they should know the cause of the disease. Whether it is from within the district or migrated," said Matemba
Matemba has urged authorities to investigate the source and strengthen prevention considering Mchinji’s boarder with Zambia.
