Council officials and stakeholders in Nkhotakota district have agreed to improve coordination and information sharing to effectively address problems affecting women and girls in the district.
Speaking on Tuesday after a dialogue between sector heads and Civil Society Organizations meant to discuss issues affecting women and girls, Estate Management Officer for Nkhotakota district council, who chaired the meeting, stressed the significance of collaborative work in awareness raising and promotion of male involvement in the fight against gender-based violence.
Kondowe noted that many women continue to suffer from economic abuse, low literacy levels, and heavy household responsibilities that limit their empowerment, hence the appeal.
“It is important to sustain community awareness campaigns and increase male involvement because these are critical strategies in preventing Gender-Based Violence and promoting gender equality.
“I believe coordination and information sharing are vital if we are to effectively respond to the challenges facing women and girls in Nkhotakota,” Kondowe said.
Gender Officer for Umunthu Plus, Andrew Chikasamba said the dialogue created space for discussion on real challenges affecting women and girls and to receive feedback from government officials, adding the organization will continue to monitor trends.
“The dialogue has created open space to discuss real challenges affecting women and girls. I'm glad that the government officials have been engaged directly and provided solutions,” said Chikasamba.
The dialogue was organized under the Women Voice for Peace project with financial support from the Women’s Peace and Humanitarian Fund through UN Women.
