Youth Forum for National Transformation (YOFONAT) has emphasized that training young people in green skills is key to protecting the environment and promoting sustainable development.
Executive Director for YOFONAT Chifundo Robert said equipping youth with skills in areas such as renewable energy and waste management will help reduce environmental degradation.
He added that the government can also greatly benefit from youth involvement in green innovations, as these initiatives can create jobs, improve livelihoods and contribute to economic growth.
"These young people can help the country respond to climate change challenges through the green skills we are training them,” said Robert.
However, he noted that government systems do not recognize the innovation by young people, saying it is a hindering factor for many to venture into green innovations.
"Aside from that, some of these young people have financial issues and some low self-esteem to acquire green skills,” he added.
Despite these challenges, he said youths have the ability and willingness to protect the environment and boost the economy if given the right support.
YOFONAT is implementing a 2-year Waste Gold Initiative in Lilongwe with support from MEET.
The project empowers youth and community groups with green skills for income and environmental protection.
