Health experts have expressed concern over the growing use of drugs and
other substances by some men who believe the products can enhance their sexual
performance.
Malawi Health Equity Network (MHEN) Executive
Director George Jobe says the
trend is worrying amid increasing reports of the use of such products, which
can have serious health consequences when used without proper medical guidance.
Jobe warns that, apart from death, the misuse
of these substances can lead to a range of health complications, including
heart problems, high or low blood pressure, stroke, kidney damage, liver
complications, among other health challenges.
He adds that some products sold in local
markets without the supervision of healthcare professionals may contain harmful
or unregulated ingredients that can cause unexpected side effects.
“There is a need for stronger measures to
ensure medicines and substances intended for sexual health are used safely and
appropriately. This includes strengthening regulation and monitoring of
pharmaceutical products, enforcing laws against the sale of unregistered or
counterfeit medicines, and increasing public awareness about the dangers
associated with such products,” said Jobe.
Jobe further emphasized the importance of
improving access to qualified healthcare workers who can diagnose and treat
underlying conditions contributing to sexual health problems.
Meanwhile, health expert Donald Kanjere has also expressed
concern over the growing trend of men using such substances without medical
guidance.

“Men should refrain from engaging in risky
behaviours and instead seek proper medical attention whenever they experience
sexual health concerns,” said Kanjere.
The development comes amid reports of
increasing deaths of men after using various substances in an attempt to
improve sexual performance, prompting calls for greater public awareness and
stricter regulation of such products.
