The Malawi Health Equity Network (MHEN) has expressed serious concern over a leaking sewer pipe discharging untreated sewage into Lilongwe River.
MHEN Executive Director, George Jobe says the leaking sewer line, located behind a building south of SANA Mega Shop, is posing a significant public health risk. The river is widely used by downstream communities for domestic activities, urban agriculture and other livelihood purposes.
Jobe articulates that the continued discharge of untreated sewage increases the risk of cholera, diarrhoea, typhoid and other water-borne diseases.
The organisation warns that low-income communities are likely to be the most affected.
"We urge Lilongwe City Council and other relevant authorities to urgently repair the damaged sewer infrastructure and immediately stop further discharge into the river," he said.
The network is also urging authorities to strengthen routine inspections and maintenance of sewer systems, enforce accountability where negligence is identified, and encourage public reporting of sewer leakages.
The organisation stresses that safe sanitation is a core public health obligation and has called for swift action to prevent a potential health crisis.
There was no immediate response from the Lilongwe District Council.
