Nkhotakota District is among the 11 districts which are going to benefit in the Africa Disaster Risk Financing program in South Africa (ADRIFI) project phase 2.
This was revealed during a District Executive
Committee (DEC) meeting on Monday whereby the Ministry Agriculture Irrigation
and Water Development in collaboration with the Department of Disaster
Management Affairs (DoDMA) was introducing the project.
Speaking during the presentation, Chief Disaster
Resilience Officer for DoDMA Samuel Gama said the project aims to help
communities prepare and recover from climate disasters like droughts and floods.
"The project focuses on high risk areas to
protect farmers and communities as well as building long term resilience and
expanding climate insurance solutions in Malawi", said Gama.
He said among others, the project has four
components whereby one of the components is to support index based crop
assurance for 45 000 small holder farmers and infrastructure development in the
district.
"We also have a component whereby the project
will increase capacity for disaster risk preparedness and management", he
added.
Gama disclosed that Nkhotakota and other 11
districts were selected in the project because they are highly affected by
climate, highly exposed to climate change related to agricultural production
risk livelihood.
"The project is also going to be implemented
in Karonga Rumphi, Kasungu, Salima, Mzuzu, Mangochi, Machinga, Phalombe, Balaka
and Zomba", he said.
The ADRIFI project which started in November 2024
and is expected to end in 2028 is being funded by the Africa Development Bank.
