As the Public Appointments Committee (PAC) of Parliament
started interviewing and vetting individuals selected to serve as Malawi's
representatives in foreign diplomatic missions on Tuesday, 2 June 2026,
governance expert Makhumbo Munthali says it is important that people appointed
to various positions possess the necessary skills, knowledge, and
qualifications required for those roles.
Munthali says that, in many cases, individuals are
appointed without the appropriate qualifications and are selected mainly
because of their political party affiliation or as a way of appeasing them,
even when they are not suited for the positions.
He adds that those appointed should have a clear
understanding of the duties they are expected to perform, as some appointees
often focus on personal interests rather than advancing the interests of the
country.
"Most of those chosen to represent Malawi pursue
their personal interests, and some leaders are appointed merely for
appeasement. I therefore advise those chosen to represent the country to
understand their roles," said Munthali.
Meanwhile, commenting on the matter, political analyst
George Phiri says the vetting process is important because it helps determine
whether the nominees are qualified to represent the country.
"Laws are made in Parliament, and it is the
responsibility of lawmakers and the PAC to interview the nominees so that they
are satisfied that they are suitable for the positions to which they are being
appointed," said Phiri.
Phiri says it is a legal requirement that individuals appointed to serve as
diplomats in Malawi's foreign service must appear before Parliament for
scrutiny and approval by lawmakers before they can take up those positions on
behalf of the government.
